# Things to Do in Emerald Isle, NC

Emerald Isle beach

Emerald Isle sits at the western end of the Crystal Coast, a 12-mile barrier island where the water really is that green and the beaches really are that quiet. Unlike the boardwalk bustle of some NC beach towns, Emerald Isle is about space, nature, and unhurried days. Here's how to spend your time.

The Beach

The main event. Emerald Isle's public beach access points are spaced every quarter-mile along the island. The sand is fine and white, the water is clear, and even in peak summer you can find a quiet stretch. Indian Beach, at the eastern end, offers particularly scenic shoreline with dunes thick with sea oats.

Best spots:

Water Sports

Emerald Isle is one of the best places on the Crystal Coast for kayaking and paddleboarding. The sound side (Bogue Sound) offers flat, protected water perfect for beginners. Rentals are available at several marinas along Hwy 58.

Surf fishing is excellent here. The Point, where Bogue Sound meets the ocean at the western tip, is a favorite spot for anglers. Red drum, flounder, and Spanish mackerel are common catches.

Nature & Wildlife

Emerald Isle Woods Park – A 10-acre maritime forest with walking trails, picnic areas, and a boardwalk through the salt marsh. Great for birding – herons, egrets, and osprey are common.

The Point – Walk to the very western tip of the island where the inlet opens up. Dolphins are frequently sighted here, especially in the early morning.

Bogue Inlet Pier – Walk the pier for a small fee. Great views up and down the coast. Fishing poles available for rent.

Dining

Kathryn's Bistro & Martini Bar – The standout restaurant on the island. Located in the Emerald Plantation shopping center, Kathryn's serves coastal cuisine with an upscale twist. The she-crab soup is excellent, and the martini list is the longest on the Crystal Coast. Reservations recommended in summer.

For casual meals, try the food trucks that set up near the public beach accesses in summer – they serve everything from tacos to barbecue to fresh seafood.
